Regional Energy Services Specialist

The Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities (IAMU) is currently seeking a member-focused, innovative, and results-oriented Regional Energy Services Specialist. The ideal candidate would have experience in and knowledge of the electric and natural gas utility industries.  

The Regional Energy Services Specialist will serve as a regional energy services resource for IAMU’s 137 municipal electric utilities and 51 municipal natural gas utilities, with a focus on those in underserved and rural communities. Representative responsibilities include:

  • Develop, implement and administer programs, policies and practices:
    • To promote the use of cost effective energy efficiency programs targeted at decreasing customer costs; To increase utility and utility customers’ energy and energy efficiency knowledge;
    • To encourage the expansion, diversification, and efficient use of energy resources, incentives, and programs;
    • To increase participant enrollment into the Iowa Public Building Benchmarking;
    • To increase the cost effective use of renewable energy;
  • Assist members in the analysis of current rates and rate structures and design rates structures that fairly recoup costs of service;
  • Educate member utilities about customer owned distributed generation and interconnection best practices;
  • Provide training to member utility staff and governing bodies to improve the long-term viability of gas and electric distribution systems.

The preferred candidate would have a bachelor’s degree in engineering or other related field, or equivalent experience. Experience in energy efficiency programs, renewable energy, or rate design would be beneficial. The successful candidate will a self-starter capable of managing multiple projects at once and have excellent written & verbal communications skills.


The Energy Services Specialist is required to work collaboratively across functional areas in order to serve the needs of IAMU’s members. In-state travel including overnight stays will be required although it varies in terms of frequencies, length and geography throughout the year. Most weeks will require some travel to member locations, but will not necessarily be overnight trips. Usually this position will schedule travel well in advance of the travel day. The position will most likely be located and office out of the IAMU facility in Ankeny Iowa, although we would consider allowing this position to work remotely from within the state if service to the members would not suffer and the expenses would not be significantly increased.

IAMU represents 541 municipal water utilities, 137 municipal electric utilities, 51 natural gas utilities and 25 broadband utilities statewide, and maintains a marketing relationship with a large number of associate member businesses.

Member Services AssistanT

The Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities is seeking a part time member services assistant to work in our Ankeny office a minimum of 10 hours a week, with 20 hours per week possibly available. The hours for this position are flexible in terms of hours of the day and days of the week worked within the scope of the normal business workweek (Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.), although a consistent schedule from week to week is preferred. The core duties of this position will be record keeping for training sessions taught by Association staff and the IAMU electric apprenticeship program. While not required, initially more hours (up to 29.5 hours per week) may be available if desired, as a backlog of record keeping needs to be completed. Once caught up, most of the work is not time sensitive so staying home with a sick kid, on snow days or school professional development days is not a problem. The pay range for this position is $16-$18 per hour. No benefits are available for this position. Candidate should have ability to use a computer and possess proficient data entry skills. Selection Process:
The selection process will consist of an evaluation for minimum qualifications. Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in the written exam. Date, time and location of the written exam will be sent to those invited. Due to the anticipated number of candidates, no alternative testing dates or times will be made available, and candidates are responsible for their own transportation and lodging costs to attend the exam.

Candidates scoring an average of 70% or greater on the written exam and each of the supplemental questions in this application form will be invited to participate in oral board interviews to determine civil service eligibility. A meet-and-greet and manager meeting will also be held prior to making a hiring decision.

Electric Journeyman Lineman or Apprentice

This position is responsible for designing, implementing and supporting the company’s databases, data warehouse and the development of business intelligence solutions. This position will apply business intelligence and analytics subject matter expertise (ETL, data modeling, data integration and BI development) to provide the business with the tools and data representations which allow informed organizational decision-making. 


  • Partner with CIPCO personnel to understand and document business requirements and translate those into technical specifications for informational needs.
  • Design, develop and maintain database architecture and business intelligence tools.
  • Develop ETL processes to support data integration into data warehouse ensuring high data quality.
  • Systematically implement and support data governance processes ensuring availability, usability, integrity and security to the appropriate personnel.
  • Perform ad hoc data mining from within centralized data warehouse or externally in response to inquiries across departments.
  • Prepare and maintain detailed documentation on database and business intelligence architecture.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues relating to database performance and optimization.
  • Ensure databases are adequately maintained, backed up and have proper security settings.
  • Train and mentor employees on business intelligence software and solutions with an end goal of employee self-service.
  • Stay abreast of current database and business intelligence industry trends and emerging opportunities.
  • Continuously gain experience within the technology space, as well as learn aspects of the business to provide data analysis.

Requirements and Critical Success Factors

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or related discipline with a minimum of 3 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience in writing ETL procedures using SSIS for data integration into SQL database
  • Experience with database and data warehouse designs, data modeling, data integrations, database tuning and business intelligence reporting and visualization tools (SSAS, SSRS, Power BI, Cognos, Crystal Reports)
  • Willingness and ability to collaborate in a team environment and work cross-functionally
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and willingness to think outside-the box
  • Expertise in extracting data from SQL server databases using SQL/T-SQL/MDX queries to retrieve and modify data
