Energy Services Specialist

The Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities (IAMU) is currently seeking a member-focused, innovative, and results-oriented Energy Services Specialist.

The Energy Services Specialist will:

  • serve as the subject matter expert for IAMU staff and members on distributed generation, renewable energy, and energy efficiency
  • help promote and manage IAMU programs relating to member education on distributed generation, renewable energy and energy efficiency
  • assist members with industry related regulatory filings as needed.

A bachelor’s degree is required with a degree in engineering preferred, but not required. Any combination of equivalent education and experience will be considered. The ideal candidate will have extensive understanding of the electric utility industry, including its regulatory structure, distributed and utility grade renewable energy and energy efficiency. Experience with municipal utilities is also a plus.

The successful candidate will be a self-starter capable of managing multiple projects at once and have excellent written & verbal communications skills. The Energy Services Specialist is required to work collaboratively across functional areas in order to serve the needs of IAMU’s members. Overnight travel is required a few times a year and is typically planned well in advance. The Energy Services Specialist reports to the Executive Director.

IAMU represents more than 550 municipal electric, gas, water and broadband utilities statewide, and maintains a marketing relationship with a large number of associate member businesses. IAMU offers its members advocacy, education and operations support and services with a variety of programs.

General Manager

The Indianola Municipal Utilities (IMU) seeks an energetic and experienced executive to provide strategic leadership to its customers, community and employees as the General Manager with direct responsibility for the safe, reliable and efficient delivery of electric, water and broadband services to the community of Indianola, Iowa.

IMU is governed by a five-member Board of Trustees appointed by the mayor and confirmed by the city council for staggered six year terms. IMU employs twenty-seven (27) staff members working mostly in utility operations, shares certain services with the city of Indianola, and receives certain services from city staff. Twenty employees are represented by Construction & Public Employees LiUNA Local 177, with whom IMU has just completed negotiations and will enter into a 3 year contract as of July 1st. Last fiscal year IMU generated $16 million in revenue. Rates are not regulated by the Iowa Utilities Board but are established locally by the Board of Trustees.

Reporting to the Board of Trustees, the IMU General Manager is responsible for leading all aspects of IMU operations. While a bachelor degree is preferred, any candidates with senior level leadership experience, especially in a municipal utility setting are encouraged to apply.

IMU’s next General Manager needs to be an outstanding leader with top notch communications skills who can facilitate collaboration among employees, customers and the community. Municipal utility experience is not required but consideration will be given to those with experience in a multi-utility municipal utilities of comparable size, scope and complexity. IMU has a roster of experienced and talented employees, so while an understanding of utility operations or the ability to learn such is important, the IMU General Manager is primarily a leadership position, not a technical role, and as such demonstrated leadership experience is highly preferred. IMU’s next General Manager must delegate appropriately to employees, maintain high expectations of them and hold those employees accountable for their assigned responsibilities. The IMU General Manager will need to be approachable and easy to talk to by both employees and community members. IMU is on the cusp of significantly expanding its fiber network throughout the community and the next General Manager will be responsible for ensuring the successful implementation and community roll-out of this exciting venture.

Compensation will be commensurate with experience. Utility Operator

The Cascade Municipal Utilities has an immediate opening for a permanent full-time utility operator. Duties include, but are not limited to, operating aerial truck, digger derrick, trencher backhoe, and other equipment, including the construction and maintenance of distribution and transmission lines, both overhead and underground.

Perform installation and maintenance of gas mains and service lines along with the necessary training and testing for gas operator qualifications. Operate and run generator sets including their maintenance and repairs.

Electric Engineering Technician

The Owatonna Public Utilities (OPU) has an opening for an Electric Engineering Technician.  This position performs field engineering, staking and inspections on our Electric Distribution Systems. Assists with engineering layouts and drawings using CAD. Is liaison between the Utility, City, developers, builders, and contractors to insure new services and rebuilds are completed timely. Telecommunications Technician

MP&W’s Communications utility is seeking team-oriented, customer-focused Telecommunications Technician to perform telecommunications system installations and associated tasks, including drop buries, minor troubleshooting, and repair/replacement of wiring, converters, modems and other system devices. The position will work with customers in performing installations, upgrades, and downgrades of service, including installation and setup of digital set-top boxes, cable modem, and PCs for Internet access and customer-owned equipment (VCRs, DVRs etc).

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Must be able to operate diagnostic test equipment, including signal level and volt/ohm meters to troubleshoot service issues.
  • Minimum 1 year of education and work experience or equivalent work experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with computer software & hardware, ability to read and interpret design schematics of telecommunications system, and home-networking experience preferred.
  • Must be able to safely climb up to 28’ extension ladders, 12’ step ladders, and work from elevated platform or bucket trucks up to 50’, as well as work outdoors in inclement weather conditions.
  • Valid driver’s license with chauffeur’s designation or able to acquire Chauffeur’s designation within 90 days of hire required.

General Manager

The General Manager is an advanced professional and administrative person who works as the manager of the public electric, water, gas, and waste water utility department.  Work involves the responsibility for planning, directing, and supervising the operation of the utility under the general administrative direction of the City Council.  Duties include the design, construction, maintenance, and operation of commercial and residential utility services. The Manager will be responsible for the following:

  • Plan, direct and coordinate the work of the organization; establish procedures and policies within the general policy established by the City Council; make recommendations on plans, policies and projects to the Council.
  • Administer and coordinate the development and execution of the capital improvement projects budget; participate in the development of master plans for organizing and financing capital improvement projects.
  • Advise the City Council and citizens on various utility projects and programs.
  • Coordinate work with other city departments as well as other utility interests.
  • Prepare and present a recommended budget to the City Council.

Qualifications: A college degree in engineering, business or related course of study and strong managerial and interpersonal skills is preferred.  A minimum of eight (8) years of responsible supervisory/managerial experience with a public utility or closely related organization is highly desired. 

Experience:  Knowledge of materials, methods, and practices required in municipal public utility construction, maintenance, and operations.  Knowledge of construction contract administration and knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and regulations pertaining to public utility operations is essential.

Water Treatment Operator

Job duties include but not limited to day-to-day operations of the water treatment plant, including testing and maintenance, meter change-outs and water main repairs. Applicant will work under supervision of the Water Superintendent.

Preferred candidate should have a State of Iowa Water Treatment Grade I license, with the ability to obtain a Grade II license and water distribution license. Applicants must also have a valid driver's license with the ability to obtain a Class A CDL license within six months of hire. Must be able to work weekends and holiday rotations.

Wage range is $18.00 to $20, depending on qualifications with an excellent benefit package.
